Saturday March 31, 2012

Ladies and Gentlemen

The sun is shining on Midland. You have only to look at the beautiful forsythia blossoms, the patios dotting our main street and economically a number of our businesses are starting to hire. Midland – going to be a good year.

Monday April 2nd starts with an unusual public meeting of Council at the Town Hall at 7:00 pm. Its purpose is to allow Councillors to consider the problems and challenges they face in conducting Council business and decide what should be done to improve matters.

On Tuesday April 3rd at 7:00 pm the agenda turns to our tourism economy.  Marina operators from across North Simcoe will meet at the NSSRC to hear about our area’s economic plans and then discuss how they can play a larger role in promoting our area to tourists.

On Wednesday April 4th, the Severn Sound Environmental Association is hosting an Alien Invasive Species workshop from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Oakwood Community Centre in Victoria Harbour.

At 7:00 pm that evening the focus returns to Midland Town Hall with a Public Hearing on the development of the Marcellus property at 1165 Brunelle  Sideroad.  The regular PDC meeting follows including:
-          An update on Midland building projects happening this year:
o   New Tim Hortons on Bay Street
o   MCC opening in May
o   BIN development on Hwy 12
o   Plus many others
-          Review of our Economic Action Initiatives including the Healthcare Summit, the Renew Midland project and preliminary information on a “trades incubator” for our area.

                                                          *****
On a week that is so full of springtime promise it’s good to be reminded that we must also help our environment.  This past week the Midland Water Store organized a video showing many water conservation initiatives in our Town. You can view it at:

The waste we produce continues to be a problem, which may explain the recent tendency at County Council to re-develop more landfills. You can help reduce the amount of waste by using the Town’s Treasure Days, set for Saturday May 5th and Saturday September 29th. Treasures should be out by 8:00 am that day and back before 4:00 pm.  Also the Town offers a free Garage Sale Weekend (no permit needed) on the weekend of July 14-15, 2012.

Happy Easter
